Max

I am a self medicating pothead. In fact, thanks to a pill-happy Doctor, I can self medicate with a lot of things. So considering myself to be more of a Biologist than a Chemist (this isn’t ambitious, in school I barely passed either), it should come to no surprise that as a result, I am a complete f*ck up.

Due to my most recent unemployment episode (and need of parental assistance in combatting current flea infestation), the pressure is on. My Mother wants me to move to Saudi Arabia or China and date men she sends me from Match.com; My Father wants me to live in the home-land and marry one of his overweight golfing buddies.

So being the dork that I am, completely driven by my intrigues of Ancient Civilizations (aka must avoid as much communication with family as possible), my next step is to discover the wonders of the Mayans . In diving head first into the histories of Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala I came across Max, the Crystal Skull.

Max was first discovered in 1924, underneath a tomb in Guatemala. Said to be thousands of years old, Mayan priests used the ancient skull for healing and ritual purposes. Legend has it that Max is one of the thirteen skulls that contains healing energies and information on our past and future generations. Legend also has it that when humanity is morally and spiritually evolved, the skulls will re-unite and  bestow their collective wisdom (Yes lovers/haters, they based Indiana Jones & The Crystal Skull on a real legend).

According to his keeper, JoAnn Parks, “He’s not about religion. He’s not here to help someone find a religion or a church. He’s here to help and guide each individual who’s come into contact with him to find peace, harmony and forgiveness within one’s self.” (Huffington Post)

I’m beyond intrigued.

Mind fuzzy from flea poison, I sat in my disaster zone apartment and figured after a joint I’d be fully ready to tackle the hundreds of emails cluttering my inbox, all from my Mother. More jobs in Saudi. More matches from MatchAffinity.com. At least two dozen chain letters describing the wrath of God and/or Buddha if I don’t pass this on to 20+ people… Jesus.

Aside from the fact my Mother seems to be the only person who writes me, it wasn’t long before I started to think about the next step of my spiritual journey. Whether it was the pot, the flea poison, or Ancient Aliens in the background, but within moments I began to hear Guatemala and Max calling out my name.

Currently unemployed, the decision was easy.

My date with Max is booked. I leave for Colorado in a week. This will either be the most rewarded experience since Peru, or a complete waste of money. I’ve never been so excited to travel domestically before, in my life.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”- Mark Twain

  1. Hmm, I have done research on the scull you call Max. The bloke that found it was doing some pretty shady stuff at the time and there were statements at the time from his workers that suggest he actually planted the scull then ‘found’ it the next day.
    Great blog!

    1. I think you’re referring to the discovery of the Mitchell-Hedges skull…There were rumours that M-H planted the skull for Anna to find as a “birthday surprise”… Max, on the other hand, has another story 😉 Thank you for taking the time to comment and read my posts, I’m glad you’re enjoying!
